New York – Free WordPress Theme Release
I am once more so excited to release our new theme ‘New York’ the main excitement reason is that i am giving away something to WordPress community which usually people sell. I believe New York is good enough that anybody with personal blog or any kind of blog (it depends on liking) will be willing to use it. New York comes with a lot of stuff, full features are listed below but you need to see Live Demo in order to feel it. Grungy/Urban/Transparent/Elegant everything is here with a lot of practical features

What can I adjust from Admin Theme Options??
- Sidebar 125 x 125 ads: You can tune sidebar ads from inside your theme options just enter banner URLs and enter link for them.
- Twitter, Facebook and RSS buttons: You can enter your twitter profile link, Facebook profile/fan page link, feedburner feed address.
- Email Subscription form: You can Setup your sidebar Email subscription form within Admin theme options.
- About me box: Change your About box picture, text and link.

Installation:
- Extract the new-york.zip file in a convenient location
- Copy the ‘new-york’ folder to ‘/wp-content/themes/’ directory in your web server.
- Log in to the WordPress Administration Dashboard
- Select the ‘Themes’ sub-menu from ‘Appearance’ tab
- Select the New York theme from the available list of themes to preview
- Activate the theme.
Where are Admin Theme Options??
- After Activating New York theme
- Look for ‘New York Options’ tab in sidebar menu
How ‘Featured’ post works?
- Creat a new category named ‘Featured Articles’
- Upload/attach any image to the post (more than 300px wide recommended)
- While publishing post select ‘Featured Articles’ category along with others.
- You are done. First Attachment image from the post will be used as thumbnail.
For people having problems with Featured post thumbnail:
- Download this file, rename it to ‘header.php and replace it with the original header.php in New York theme directory.
- While writing a post upload an image and copy Image Url.
- Now add a custom key with name: thumbnail and value: image url
- Make sure ‘cache’ folder found in theme directory is CHMOD 777 on your server.
- Still having problems? Its probably your server does not support GD Library. Which is so rare IMO.
People having problems with Featured post thumbnail hosted on Hostgator:
- Login to your Hostgator control panel and contact Live Chat Support.
- Ask the support technician to white list your thumbnail generation file for mod_security . You will need to give your file name and path. The file name mostly will be timthumb.php . You can find this file inside the WordPress theme folder. An example file path wp-content/themes/new-york/cropper.php

I'm having difficulty with the thumbnail appearing in the featured article box at the top. The photo is showing in the post, though. Any thoughts?
Hello mia, did you read readme.txt that ships with theme package? Setting up featured article is easy follow the steps mentions below and let me know how it goes.
How ‘Featured’ post works?
* Creat a new category named ‘Featured Articles’
* Upload/attach any image to the post (more than 300px wide recommended)
* While publishing post select ‘Featured Articles’ category along with others.
* You are done. First Attachment image from the post will be used as thumbnail.
Your readme.txt and your comment match your post to a T. I understand the process, yes, and I'm quite comfortable with WP, so this isn't a "I'm not attaching the pic" issue. My problem is that, after going through your steps detailed in your comment, your post and your readme.txt, the thumbnail is still not showing up in the featured box. It's a fresh install of both WP and your theme, no finagling of the code, just straight out of the gate and I'm having issues with it.
I'll try another fresh install of WP and the theme and report back my findings for when someone else has this issue in the future.
This is quite strange Mia and i am sorry you are having problems. It actually got approved by wordpress theme directory after heavy tests. I have no idea why it isn't showing the attachment pic when it is straight forward.
It might seems silly but it worked for me.. i was trying to attach images to the post with firefox and it wasn't just showing up on post gallery. i tried chrome and it worked.
Check list:
1. Make sure image attached to the post you can be confirmed when there is something written on upload box like this 'Gallery (1)' it means one image is attached to the post.
2. CHMOD 777 your 'cache' folder via ftp client or web file manager. You can find this folder inside New York theme folder.
If it still fails i'll make you a custom version which will work with Custom Key to pick images you define
I have the same issue with the picture problem.
I make a new post, categorize it as a featured article, upload/insert the picture into the post at its full size of 300×300 and then write something underneath it.
When I look at the main page now, it shows that their a post associated with the box but there is no picture showing there.

make sure you CHMOD 777 'cache' folder, you can find it in New York theme directory or look if this method helps.
I have been having the same issue since day one when trying this new theme. No matter how many times I attach a pic to the "featured article" post nothing appears in the middlebox?
Can you please explain an alternate method for getting an image into th middlebox?
I tried everything as you did and the only thing that has worked was to go into the header.php (in the wordpress appearance tab) and change this image source on line 80
<img src= "<?php bloginfo('stylesheet_directory'); ?>/cropper.php?src=<?php echo $img; ?>&h=175&w=306&zc=1"
to my direct photo link from the post, so in my case that made it

I was pulling my hair out trying to do this by adding the Featured Articles category, when that did not work I used the alternative php provided in the link on this page and for some reason that still did not work. Here is my site now that I've got it fixed:

Unfortunately if you want to use the image from each new featured post you will have to change this everytime but so far the only quick fix solution that has worked for me.

I have to say this is a very nice looking theme, nice job. I installed it and tested it out on mine and it worked good. I noticed however if I looked at this theme (new york) in an Opera browser there's a lot of corruption happening. I tested it on opera 9.2.
Also I was wondering if you could post a walk through on how to remove the About me area and the social networking area atop the page and instead have 3 featured articles atop the page.
Not sure if last reply went in, but I am having the same issue as Mia. I made the image attached it also tried to insert the image into post as the first thing someone would see and no go. Tried in Safarii as well since I first did it in Mozilla and still no go.
CHMOD everything that I thought could help and still nothing. Any ideas MOin? Its a great theme just this one feature is off.
Check the above documentation i updated a file and method of achieving thumbnail it should work now.
I'm either still missing something or something else is going on.
Downloaded new header.php, replaced old, CHMODD'd everything in upload folder. Folder itself.
Made new post, clicked Upload/Insert button to add image, added image bigger then 300 x 300. Got exact image url on server where it could be found ( http://mollyfahey.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/... ), went down to custom fields, made new field with name thumbnail and value same as link above.
Saved everything and published post. Main screen still remains the same as before with Post Title showing up in Featured Box but no image.
Perhaps I missed a step?
There is a possible mistake…
you do not need to chmod upload folder at all.. you need to chmod 777 cache folder in theme directory..

One more thing: While writing post Creat a new category 'Featured Articles' and publish that post under it (you can select multiple categories along with it). Last image from category: Featured Article is what showing on main page.
Hate to be the big pain here, but still something seems off. I had already chmod the cache too and I definitely have a Featured Articles Category but still nothing seems to be matching up in terms of it appearing.
I absolutely have no idea why it is not showing now. Disable all the plugins and give it a try also mention your blog URL.

I'm not that good with php, could you please tell me how to fix the loading problem on the featured box? I downloaded the header.php and uploaded it on my host but I don't really understand what adding a custom key is? And yeah, how is it possible to edit the following texts: "About me", "Just another wordpress weblog" and "keep in touch". I tried to look around the files but couldn't really find the right one. I'd really appreciate your help!

for that you need to edit single.php
how do you get rid of the dashed borders?
find all "dashed" entry in the "style.css" file and replace by "solid"
WOOT – That worked for me. Not all of the theme images updated, so I just uploaded the ones I already had saved locally and presto finito = worked.

I'm plotting something for a future project – is there a way to replace the Featured Article link with a static image? Simply replacing the script in the header.php with an image code doesn't do it.
Same size box – I'm just curious about using the box as ad space, bypassing the featured article thing.
Yes this is easily do able by editing header.php line 80 just change the image source.
just for information : some entry in "style.css" are misspelled ( or typed ? I'm not native english) :
it's "featured" not "#feautred-article h2" or "#feautred-article:hover"
it's works because the div is named "div id="feautred-article"

yes you can do that by a plugin named Limit Posts. Simply install this plugin and call it with amount of alphabets you needs.

the feedburner link is not working
the email feedburner is not working
Email feed needs to be setup from feedburner dashboard to work with this theme after enabling email feeds enter your feed name in New york Admin options. If you downloaded New York from wordpress site then you can't adjust feedburner link from admin menu. Download it from this site again and it will be fine other wise edit header.php.
I am having one heck of a time getting my theme to look ANYTHING like the demo shot. I know nothing baout CCS and PHP. Any help would be awesome. I don't have the social buttons on my site like I would like to and the colors aren't showing. Thanks.

If you view my blog, you'll see that mine is quite bland compared to the actual NEW YORK theme. I have read the readme.txt. I downloaded and activated the file straight from wordpress, I didn't have to download the entire file onto my computer. I am a complete beginner and cannot figure out what I have to do.

I was trying to get my blog verified in google search and it asks to make a page with a specific google tag on it…i.e. http://www.djfoto.net/fotobloggin/googled458973957.html. but the new york theme doesnt allow for me to be able to manipulate the page title like that in the URL. any help in getting my new york theme page verified in google?

It is either your wordpress installation or your host that is not making you verifying your site. New York is just a skin and has nothing to do with Google verification.
In the header to the right, it says "About" and when you hover, it makes this really cool darkened rollover background behind the text as well as a dotted pink underline so users can see it's a navigation button that goes to the About Page. How can I put my other important pages beside it?

No, it's related to New York. You have one spot at the top of the header where it says "About" but I want to put more of those buttons there. I know how to make pages, so I'm not sure why you sent me that page. I couldn't find the answer to my question on there. I don't know how to ask this question any other way. I guess my question is how do I make more of those buttons?

You have About, Test, and Test Page as buttons at the top of the header. On my New York blog, I only have About. My question is why do I not have the two other buttons even though I have many pages already programmed. I hope this makes my question more specific and clear. Thanks so much!

No matter what I try I cannot get an image in the featured post. I am on Hostgator and I know they have GD library installed. Any suggestions on what the issue is and how I can solve it?
Also on Host Gator and also having a problem getting this to work. When I look at the source code of the page it shows the img url correctly but is not displaying anything in the featured box..

Hi great theme. Just FYI…For some reason when i installed the theme from wordpress.org it was missing a lot of image files. I downloaded again from this site and reinstalled and everything worked fine. Thank you for a great theme!
