There are several kind of website analysis and statistic tools these days, some of them are free and some of them cost you minimal amount but why go for paid tool if you can get a free substitute. I am not saying that paying for a decent tool is bad but for an entry level website free statistics tools are more than enough. If you are using WordPress then you are lucky because WordPress stands out when it comes to plug-ins and addons to increase usability. A couple of days ago i was looking for a wordpress stats plugin to use on my websites and came across many of decent options from which I’ve chosen two of them and mentioning ten best which I find most compromising and do not forget to tell which one you pick out

WassUp is a WordPress plugin to track your visitors in real time. It has a very readable and fancy admin console to keep tracks of your blog’s users visits.

It has a “current visitors online” view and a more detailed “visitors details” view where you can know almost everything your users are doing on your blog, it’s very useful for SEO or statistics maniacs. It comes with a “Spy” view in Ajax like the Digg Spy.

2. Firestats Plugin For WordPress

3. StatPress Reloaded

Using StatPress Reloaded you can see your visitors actions while they are surfing your blog or check which are the preferred pages, posts and categories. In the Dashboard menu you will find the StatPress Reloaded page where you could look up the statistics (overview or detailed). StatPress Reloaded also includes a widget you can add to a sidebar (or easy PHP code if you can’t use widgets!).

4. WordPress.com Official Stats Plugin

WordPress.com stats plugin is a very simple and straight forward statistic plugin which shows very basic information such as Referrer, Search engine terms and where people are going when they leave your page. This is all it is but the best thing about this plugin is fast interface, ease of access and simplicity.

5. kStats Reloaded

(click image for full size view)

Using kStats you can instantly see who’s coming to your site, where they are coming from, be it another web site or one of the many popular search engines, and much more. See up to the minute information on how many unique visitors you’ve gotten, how many pageviews they’ve resulted in, including information on which crawlers are visiting and indexing your WordPress site.

kStats is much faster than many of its predecessors due to the fact that it takes a completely new approach to how it stores and maintains information. Using a slightly more complex database schema and running a daily aggregate of information allows it to reduce its SQL interaction by literally hundreds of queries.

6. nStatistics

Get Statistics for your blog, see last 15 days (visits/page views), Quick today Stats, Traffic sources, Accessed Pages and Traffic Sources. Every category can hold information for today, yesterday, last 7 days, this month, and last month.

7. WP Session Manager

(click image for full size view)

This simple yet effective statistic wordpress plugin is not about bells and whistles. With WP Session Manager it’s all about usability and pro level user info if you are interested in studying visitor behavior. According to the Developer of this plugin WP Session Manager offers The number of visitors in the last day, The number of pages each visitor looked at, Which pages have been looked at, The times each page was visited, The visitor count displayed per page, Recent site activity, Support for user excludes by session_id, user_id or ip address, Support for page excludes and Delete data functionality.

8. Pixelstats WordPress plugin

Count every viewer and every page impression for each article, no matter how and where it is read: pixelstats tracks views of each blog post or page, not only on a single article page but also on every other page where the complete article is shown, i.e. the blog front page, category pages, search result page, archive pages and even RSS feeds.

Normal statistic tools count visitors and page impressions per actual page or URL, i.e. an article view is only counted, when your visitor clicks on the article’s permalink. This doesn’t make sense for blogs, because many of your visitors read articles on your blog’s front page or in full content RSS feeds.

This plugin does not supply endless features to analyze your visitor’s behavior, it just gives you an accurate impression, which of your articles is viewed how many times.

Pixelstats can distinguish between recurring and non-recurring views per (anonymous) user to compute a unique or total view count per post/page. You can show off your stats and display the view count for each article on your blog. Pixelstats offers comfortable analyzation tools, including charts, dashboard widget etc.

You can jump through a calendar and compare results with any past day, week, month or year. Zip and other file tracking is also possible.

Most Mac developers and designers who use WordPress install a local version of it the first thing after they do an OS installation. With Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, people have encountered a number of difficulties while trying to install WordPress locally.

Here are the steps you can take to install a local copy of WordPress.

Step 1: Download the Mac version of MySQL from here.

Step 2: Now install the MySQL package. The preference pane can be installed by dragging MySQL.prefPane to /Library/PreferencePanes however it is not very helpful as there is a bug that prevents MySQL from being started with this.

Step 3: Manually start MySQL by typing this in one terminal window:

sudo /usr/LOCAL/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld

Step 4: Close the terminal window and open another one. Type in the following and restart MySQL each time by rebooting the system:

sudo mkdir /var/mysql/
sudo ln -s /tmp/mysql.sock /var/mysql/mysql.sock

Step 5: You will need to substitute your chosen MySQL root password for {ROOTPASS} and the Bonjour computer name (shown at the top of Sharing in System Preferences) for {HOST}.

$ mysql -u root
> DROP DATABASE test;
> DELETE FROM mysql.user WHERE User = '';
> FLUSH privileges;
> SET password FOR root@localhost = password('{ROOTPASS}');
> SET password FOR root@127.0.0.1 = password('{ROOTPASS}');
> SET password FOR 'root'@'{HOST}.local' = password('{ROOTPASS}');
> quit

Step 6: Now comes creating the WordPress MySQL database and user. {ROOTPASS} will be the same. In the following example, a database named wordpress is created and a username wpuser is granted privileges.

$ mysql -u root -p
Enter Password: {ROOTPASS}
> CREATE DATABASE wordpress;
> GRANT ALL privileges ON wordpress.* TO wpuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'foo';
> SET password FOR wpuser@localhost = old_password('wppass');
> quit

Step 7: Turning on PHP is fairly easy. Open the file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf.

Step 8: Remove the “#” from the following line # LoadModule php5_module and save the file.

Step 9: Finally you can install WordPress. Download and extract WordPress from here.

Step 10: Copy the extracted contents to your Sites folder under your user name.

Step 11: In the Sites folder, open wp-config-sample.php and save it as wp-config.php

Step 12: Change the following first lines of the document to point to your database.

define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress'); // The name of the DATABASE

define('DB_PASSWORD', 'wppass'); // …AND password
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost:/tmp/mysql.sock'); // 99% chance...

Step 13: Restart apache by typing this in the terminal:

sudo apachectl restart

Step 14: Commence installation by using your browser to navigate to your installation folder. Replace “user” with your username:

http://localhost/~user/wp-admin/install.php

Step 15: People facing problems might have to update their virtual hosts with the following command: Again, replace “user” with your username:

sudo cp /etc/httpd/users/user.conf /etc/apache2/users/user.conf

Step 16: Restart apache once again with:

sudo apachectl restart

Web designers and developers today start out without having extensive prior knowledge about coding. They do not go to art or graphic designing school. They decide to make websites and start self educating. That is how many designers start out.

These self educated designers believe in themselves and many of them accomplish a lot – they can brilliantly create designs and websites that have flow and are well connected. But because they have learned everything themselves, they often become overambitious and try doing more where less is needed.

Many sites are becoming unnecessarily complicated. Site creators should learn that their designs need to be accessible for the average internet user. Account creation is one great example of this. If somebody wants to create an account on your site, he should not have to hunt for the “Sign Up” button – the button should be right there, catching the visitor’s attention. Similarly the account creation page should not require any instructions. Its flow should be simple to follow and understand.

Here is an image extract from HuffDuffer’s signup page:

You can see how simple and user friendly the account creation page was made. HuffDuffer realizes the need to have social skills in their websites. People visiting a site want a nice change and something that presents information in a conversational manner is surely appreciated.

Sifter’s support page utilizes a similar social skill pattern.

Any visitor with a complaint or question will not only enter his summary but also learn when to expect a response.

Incorporating such simple social skills into one’s website can add a great deal of charm to the site. While interactive design and tools are important social skills are a key element in today’s successful websites.

A site with a brilliant design that lacks a conversational manner is the internet-equivalent of somebody with great looks but an unimpressive personality. Try adding that ‘personality’ feature to your website to make it stand out.
